We’ve all seen it, amazing houses with outdoor spaces that feel... off. Most of the time, it’s due to a few avoidable design mistakes.
Mistake #1: No plan.Just planting things because they’re pretty or on sale usually leads to a chaotic mess. Start with a simple plan, even a sketch! Know where the sun hits, where the water drains, and how you’ll move around.
Mistake #2: Ignoring the scale. That tiny tree might be cute now, but wait until it’s 20 feet tall in 3 years. Understanding growth and spacing is key.
Mistake #3: Forgetting function. You want a beautiful space, sure, but also one that works. Think about how you'll use it. Shade where you need it, lighting where you walk, seating where people gather.
Mistake #4: Too many materials.Mixing five different types of stone, three woods, and neon gravel? No, thanks. Keep it consistent and cohesive.
Bottom line: It’s not about doing more, it’s about doing it right.
